Art Gallery in Yarra, Sculpture in Yarra, Associations in Yarra

Established to provide a large space for sculpture in 1997, it is an Artist Run Initiative, run by the Committee members of the Contemporary Sculptors' Association. The Yarra Sculpture Gallery 's aim is to produce a venue for the members of the BSA to exhibit as healthy as encourage and promote new and experimental sculptors to exhibit. We produce 3 affordable and healthy maintained exhibition spaces and a projection room and aim to be close for a diverse range of artists and viewers alike. The Gallery acknowledges the continuing encourage of the City of Yarra.

This was prior a well artist run network before large, outdoor sculpture prizes, major commissions, specific sculpture collections, valiant private collectors and sculptors being seen as bankable by commercial galleries. We needed a space that was affordable, large scale, versatile and with appropriate access. The promote was colossal from artists, the arts community and the public. Thanks to visionaries within the City of Yarra, we were able to secure a lease of the gallery space. The Contemporary Sculptors' Association Inc. (ca) was formed to manage the gallery and thrive other programs associated with expanding audiences, lobbying for artist rights, creating networks and exhibiting opportunities. Well over four thousand artists have exhibited at Yarra Sculpture Gallery in our almost 20 year history, with a well blend of solo, group and curated exhibitions. Artists at all career stages have shown their work, from student shows through to established artists. Galleries which traditionally represented sculptors were either closing or moving to smaller, often second floor spaces, making exhibiting sculpture close impossible. Many sculptors found themselves cut slack from the commercial gallery system and without representation. Even more disappointingly, younger sculptors, particularly those who operated outer the commercial system, were not being given an opportunity to exhibit at all. A total generation of sculptors was finding it hard to experiment with scale, extreme concepts, fresh media and using nontraditional materials.
