This technique may leave discoloration and/or bruising on the treated area; this is normal and may last over a week. Gua Sha (scraping or spooning): A technique where a tool such as a spoon or coin is used to scrape the skin after oil has been applied. Acupressure: similar to acupuncture only using finger pressure as apposed to needles. In this technique oil is applied onto the skin. The skin will raise and often be discoloured and/or bruised, this is a normal response that may last over a week. A technique using glass cups that have been applied to the skin using heat (fire) to produce a strong suction effect. Cupping:. Moxa can often leave a temporary slight yellow residue on the skin. Moxa can burn quickly and produce a large amount of smoke. A technique where the herb 'Mugwort' is burnt on the skin to produce a therapeutic effect. Moxibustion (moxa):. Based on the principles of TCM (Traditional Chinese Medicine), shiatsu encourages energetic and blood circulation throughout the body to aid in maintaining health. Shiatsu is a meridian (energetic pathways of the body) based therapy. Treatments may use many parts of the body including hands, elbows, forearms, fingers, knees and feet. Various techniques are employed and chosen as appropriate. Shiatsu: A form of body work performed traditionally on a futon on the floor with patient fully clothed. I am a member of the Shiatsu Therapists Association of Australia whose function is to ensure high standards of practice in this field, including compliance with high standards of client focused professional and ethical behaviour. In my practice I employ my knowledge of acupoints throughout the body and use different techniques to activate them and restore the body's energetic balance: acupressure, moxibustion, scraping and cupping. In the Australian Shiatsu College I was trained in the traditional Chinese skills of tongue and pulse diagnosis and an understanding of the body based on Traditional Chinese Medical Theory and acupoint theory. My Shiatsu training has helped reduce this to negligible levels. As a long term sufferer of migraines I received treatment based on the time old philosophy of Traditional Chinese Medicine. Shiatsu helps to restore your connection with your self, by working on your body's natural rhythm and by providing holistic care and complete client focus for an extended period. As a husband and father of two young children living in the city I can well appreciate the stresses of daily life and how easy it is to be too busy and to lose touch with one's core.
