Services

Council aims to improve the quality of life of local community members by providing services that respond to local needs and are delivered to a high standard. Council provides both universal services that are worn by most community members (such as waste and recycling collection or footpath maintenance), and specialized services which respond to specific needs (such as delivered meals, youth services and kid care). Sundry accounts Including home help, mature day care, delivered meals, facilities hire, personal training permits, etc. Yarra Council is proposing to transform the former Richmond Police Station into a community arts space. The police station is located following to the Richmond Town Hall on Bridge Road. The consultation included two information sessions where heritage and architectural consultants Lowell Chen presented prelimary designs for the police station. The past police station sits to the west of Richmond Town Hall (next to barbecues Galore) and is a building of meaningful heritage value. It was constructed in the slow 1870s and has been extended and modified over time. The building is currently worn as Council offices and storage space. Council sees the redevelopment of the building as the first step towards its broader vision for activating the area around the town hall. Stage one of the proposal focuses on redeveloping the former police station into a community arts facility. The building’s outer areas would be used as publicly accessible pop up’ art spaces and for street theater. Council is proposing to demolish all alterations and additions made to the building, retaining only the original twostorey police station and blue stone lock up dating back to the 1870s. A fresh two deposit building at right angles to the street on the western side would effectively create two ground slick public spaces a semi enclosed courtyard and an below croft space under the fresh building. A new ramp and stairs at the front of the police station from Bridge Road would improve access and reactivate the building’s main facade. If the works described above are supported by the community and granted a planning permit, construction would be expected to start in 2018. Stage two would involve construction of a dedicated two to three place art gallery at the rear of the courtyard on the northern side of the site. A budget has not yet been set for the project, but the first stage of works is expected to cost in surplus of 1 million.
